Hyperpigmentation: Causes and Treatments

Hyperpigmentation is characterized by the appearance of darker patches of skin on the body. Depending on the individual, patches can appear anywhere on the skin. This extremely prevalent skin condition affects over 5 million people in the United States alone! My Perfect Skin Clinic provides a variety of procedures to reduce hyperpigmentation of the face.

Where does excess pigmentation come from?

There are a variety of probable causes for darker skin spots. Whatever cause, these spots form when your body creates excessive amounts of melanin. There is also the possibility of a hormone imbalance. This is considerably less common than other causes, but you should consult a physician if your hyperpigmentation is more pronounced and not due to any other condition.

INFLAMMATION AND AGING

Initially, a variety of skin conditions may result in the development of dark spots. These conditions include acne scars, blisters, severe insect bites, dermatitis, and even minor cuts and scratches. All of these factors produce skin irritation, enhancing the skin’s generation of melanin.

As we age, our skin begins to thin out, and the number of pigment-containing cells decreases. However, the surviving pigment cells multiply, and black blotches appear where they remain. Although we cannot stop ourselves from aging, we can lessen the signs of age with treatment and routine.

PROLONGED SUN EXPOSURE

Too much sun exposure is one of the most prevalent causes of hyperpigmentation. Melanin’s capacity to absorb the sun’s harmful UV radiation is its primary benefit. Initially, the result is a lovely tan. When sun exposure is severe or too frequent, persistent dark patches emerge.

To prevent hyperpigmentation caused by sun exposure, apply sunscreen regularly. There are daily use facial sunscreens that protect and boost the skin’s general health.

MELASMA

Melasma spots are dark spots that appear as a result of hormone changes, such as during pregnancy. A pregnancy-related adverse effect that does not affect everyone has increased melanin production. The ensuing “mask of pregnancy” consists of discoloration on the abdomen and face. Similarly, contraceptive-using women may encounter similar adverse effects. Unfortunately, darker skin spots can persist for years before fading partially or completely.

Helpful skin treatments and products.

Luckily, hyperpigmentation can be treated in a variety of ways. In order to get rid of age spots, you should combine professional treatments with self-care. The efficiency and time required to clear are greatly affected by the causes and degree of skin darkening. Your aesthetician can assess your skin’s needs and recommend a treatment schedule.

GET GLOWING PEEL

Skin rejuvenation with mild chemical peels involves eliminating the top layer of dead skin. The new skin beneath is typically more radiant, smooth, and free of wrinkles than the old skin. This treatment is effective for hyperpigmentation due to melasma, UV exposure, or inflammation. After getting a chemical peel, your esthetician will tell you to avoid the sun for a bit because your skin is extremely sensitive to UV rays.

Vi PEEL

Medium depth medical peel resulting in moderate to significant peeling. Five different medium depth peels designed to lift pigment from melasma, remove sun damage, alleviate acne and scarring, decrease fine lines and wrinkles. Ingredients can include: TCA, Retinoic, Salicylic, Phenol, Vitamin C, Kojic, Hydrocortisone, Hydroquinone and Benzoyl Peroxide. Safe for all skin tones.

COLLAGEN PEPTIDE SERUM

Peptides, hyaluronic acid, antioxidant vitamins C and E, and other ingredients work to repair damaged collagen and slow the skin’s aging process.

SILKY SPF30 SUNSCREEN

PEPTIDE MOISTURIZER

This formula is ideal for acne-prone and aging skin because it is highly moisturizing, mild, and excellent at reducing inflammation, increasing collagen, improving suppleness, and generally doing good things for the skin.

How to help avoid future skin discoloration

As you rebuild your skin’s youthful, luminous appearance, you’ll want to prevent hyperpigmentation from reappearing! Follow these instructions to maintain the health and appearance of your skin.

Maintain your skin care regimen

Maintaining a consistent skincare routine is essential. Visits to the aesthetician are only effective if they are part of a regular regimen. Don’t deviate from the regimen your aesthetician has laid out for you if you want to maximize the positive effects on your skin.

DON’T POP PIMPLES ON YOUR SKIN

Don’t touch those pimples, blackheads, insect bites, or other skin irritations. It always makes your skin redder and more inflamed. A previous section established that inflammation is the root cause of skin discoloration. If you try to fix these spots, they will look worse for longer. Don’t give in!

MAKE SURE TO APPLY YOUR SUNSCREEN EVENLY

To prevent sun damage, ensure that you apply SPF regularly. If you plan to spend a lot of time in the sun on a particular day, reapply sunscreen every two hours. In addition to preventing hyperpigmentation, you also protect yourself from skin cancer, wrinkles, and sunburn!
